ZachOverflow is a recurring column in which I attempt to answer one frequently asked data science question thoroughly and honestly. No oversaturated topics. No listicles. No clickbait. Just my (mostly) unfiltered responses based on professional experience, technical exposure and, yes, the occasional unsubstantiated opinion.
A few Christmases ago, my college-aged sister was excited that I sent her a virtual gift. Like a physical gift the possibilities were endless: It could be a Starbucks gift card, concert tickets or a not-yet-devalued NFT.
Instead, as she opened the email, her excitement faded.
My parents questioned her mood change, to which she responded:
“Zach got me school.”
I laughed because, technically, she was right. Since she was taking programming classes, I found a comprehensive JavaScript course on Udemy I thought would be helpful and gifted that to her.
Though she ultimately completed the course (and later thanked me), her reaction summed up what those outside of tech don’t understand about continuous learning.
Why would I need to take supplemental online courses on top of university courses?
As a graduate student who balanced several part-time jobs and, eventually, wedding planning, with a job search, I can understand aversion to additional work. After all, shouldn’t college (both undergraduate and graduate) programs adequately prepare students for tech-oriented roles?
We’re paying them (and loan servicers) a ton of money to outsource the pain of assembling and executing a professional-grade curriculum.
So then why should the burden be on students to do additional learning? As someone who didn’t begin their educational or professional track in tech, having to learn outside of classroom time was jarring and I constantly asked myself the same questions.
But after noticing gaps in my school’s curriculum, (cough, cough) SQL, cloud platforms, data engineering fundamentals, I quickly changed my mindset.
