Deputy National Team Lead of the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), Sam Achimugu, Wednesday, said the UK government has invested £60 million in promoting innovative learning solutions, covering various aspects of education reform, including textbook distribution, teacher training, and government support.
He stated this at the media parley in commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Education, with the support of UK foreign Commonwealth in Abuja.
He noted that as part of its efforts, PLANE has provided textbooks to over 2,500 schools, benefiting pupils from primary one to Primary Four in Hausa literacy and numeracy.
He added that additionally, more than 10,000 teachers have received training to enhance their capacity to deliver quality education.
“The initiative also includes technical assistance, where Nigerian consultants and international experts support government agencies in improving budget processes and education planning,” he said.
He stated the role of the media in advocating for improved access and quality education.
The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the state of education in Nigeria and the role of the media in shaping its future.
PLANE is a seven-year programme funded by the UK government, aimed at building a more inclusive, safe, and effective education system in Nigeria.
“In the states where we work, we have recorded progress in addressing systemic challenges and promoting innovative learning solutions. However, for improved outcomes in education nationally, there needs to be continuous advocacy,” Achimugu said.
Also, the Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, reiterated the UK’s commitment to the PLANE programme, which is set to run until at least 2028.
“The programme has already supported 1.5 million children in accessing a better quality, inclusive education, with a focus on early-grade reading and strengthening fundamental maths skills,” Attfield said.
He said that PLANE is working closely with federal and state education agencies to ensure long-term improvements in the education system
Addressing the theme of the International Day of Education, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” Attfield highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in improving learning outcomes, especially for underserved communities and persons with disabilities.
