Updated: Nigeria plunged into darkness as national grid collapses again – Guardian Nigeria

Nigeria has been thrown into darkness once more following the collapse of the national power grid on Monday.
The system, which has collapsed many times this year, only went down at about 18:48 hours cutting out the distribution companies from supply.
The Guardian gathered that the power generation dropped to zero at 19:41 hrs
The frequent grid collapses have continued to disrupt economic activities, affect homes, and hamper critical services in various sectors.
This latest grid failure highlights the persistent issues within Nigeria’s energy sector in terms of infrastructure, despite numerous government initiatives and investments aimed at reforming the industry
Limited supply has since been restored, with Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) receiving 30MW and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) getting 20MW.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) have confirmed the grid failure.
In a statement, Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, said that the collapse has resulted in widespread outages across the company’s network, impacting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.
The Abuja Disco said the power outage being experienced was due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas.
“Rest assured, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding.”
Also, EKEDC confirmed the incident, noting that the grid collapse led to a loss of power supply across its network.
The company assured customers that it is actively working with relevant partners to ensure a quick resolution and will provide updates as soon as more information is available.
As of the time of filing this report, TCN has yet to release an official statement on the cause of the grid collapse.
Electricity Market Analyst, Lanre Elatuyi said that grid collapse occurred when there is an imbalance between generation and load that can not be managed in real-time thereby leading to frequency excursions out of the nominal values prescribed by the grid code
“The reason for the grid collapse is unknown until the Regulator comes out to make an official statement after they might have found out from the System Operator that is in charge of maintaining grid reliability. So whatever we say may be conjectures, or at best textbook reasons why the power grid may collapse.
“The solution to this is for the grid to operate as provided for in the grid code. There must be visibility in real-time to see what is happening on the grid. Adequate ancillary services must be procured and market players must abide by the rules of the market,” he said.
He added that there is a need for a proper balancing mechanism to ensure that generation and load are balanced at every instance.
