Tompkins County Environmental Health says they’re looking for a dog that bit a person on Friday afternoon on the Dryden Trail around the bridge area before Keith Lane to make sure the dog doesn’t have a rabies infection. The incident occurred around 3pm on May 16 when a person was bitten on the hand while petting another dog.
“The biting dog was described as a large dog with short grayish brown fur, a breed unknown to the person,” according to Tompkins County Whole Health. “The dog was with a person who presented as a white male, approximately 25-35 years old. The biting dog and its owner were walking with a second dog, who is described as a large dog, similar to a Bernese Mountain dog.”
Environmental Health have said that they need “to verify vaccination status and health of the biting dog through a ten day observation period. If the dog can be located and observed to be healthy by the Department, the risk of rabies infection can be ruled out.”
If health officials can’t rule out the possibility that the dog has rabies, the person who was bitten may have to undergo a series of post-exposure rabies treatments that include injections.
“We would like to remind the public the importance of getting owner information and having bites checked as soon as possible to determine if rabies post-exposure treatment is needed,” they say. “Avoid contact with any unfamiliar cats or dogs and any wild animals.”
Anyone with information about the dog is asked to call the Tompkins County Environmental Health Division at 607-274-6688. Staff are on call 24/7 at this number.
