School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics – wm.edu

The School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics aligns with W&M’s academic mission and expands the university’s ability to prepare students to thrive in a data-rich world. It will bring together four of the university’s units: Applied Science, Computer Science, Data Science and Physics.
High-impact research in data-intensive fields will further converge with academic and professional career preparedness, meeting increased student and employer demand while achieving goals from the university’s Vision 2026 strategic plan.
“The jobs of tomorrow belong to those prepared to solve tomorrow’s problems. Machine learning, AI, computational modeling — these are essential modes of critical thinking and core to a liberal arts education in the 21st century.”  ~ President Katherine A. Rowe
As William & Mary launches its first new school in 50 years, Dean Doug Schmidt shares how the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics will blend breakthrough research, interdisciplinary innovation and real-world readiness to prepare students for a data-driven future.
Dr. Douglas C. Schmidt, Inaugural Dean of the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics presented “Surfing the AI Wave: A Human-Centered Approach to Innovation and Ethics” at the Spring 2025 Tack Lecture.
The school will be housed in the heart of campus with the completion of phase four of the Integrated Science Center in fall 2025. It will be a space where graduate and undergraduate students excel in a combination of disciplines and where research opportunities will be expanded, continuing to attract world-class faculty and external investments.
