The Delta State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), John Vandi Kwaghe, said a heavy rainstorm has wreaked havoc at the orientation camp in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to Kwaghe, several key facilities were destroyed, including six electricity poles, the main kitchen, kitchen stores, and other infrastructure.
The Delta State NYSC Coordinator disclosed this during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch A Stream I corps members posted to the state.
He described the damage as a significant disruption, particularly in catering for the large number of corps members currently undergoing orientation.
Kwaghae added that the destruction of the main kitchen and the kitchen store by the rainstorm was one of the challenges faced while cooking for the corps members, and the storage of food items.
He, however, commended the governor for approving the repair of the damaged kitchen and the kitchen store.
“The quick intervention of the State Government in rectifying/repairing some critical camp facilities that were blown off/destroyed by the rainstorm shortly before the commencement of the ongoing 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream orientation exercise was very much helpful,” he said.
Kwaghe also applauded the governor for the ongoing internal road construction, noting that it will help ease movement, prevent erosion and beautify the orientation camp.
The state coordinator said the three-week orientation programme was carefully designed to equip corps members with the necessary skills and values for national interest.
He said 1802 Prospective Corps Members, comprising 829 males and 973 females, were registered at the state orientation course.
The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, assured corps members posted to the state of their safety and welfare during the mandatory one-year national service.
Oborevwori, represented by the commissioner for Youth Development, ThankGod Harry Trakiriowei, congratulated the corps members, noting that the swearing-in ceremony is a significant beginning, where they will find Delta State to be home away from home.
