As artificial intelligence reshapes industries and workplaces at an unprecedented pace, the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science is launching a new Master of Science in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Designed for working professionals and career-changers alike, the part- and full-time program offers the flexibility, depth, and personalization needed to thrive in an evolving digital economy.
“There’s no time like the present,” says Chris GauthierDickey, associate professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science. “We’re at the beginning of a wave, and gaining these skills now gives someone a real leg up in the future of applications and business.”
The new program equips students with the practical tools and foundational knowledge to lead in data-driven and AI-powered fields. Prospective students can still apply for the fall—the final international application deadline and the first priority application deadline are May 5.
Sean Connin, teaching professor and director of Data Science Graduate Programs, says the new program is designed to meet the needs of “what industry is looking for, both now and in the near future.”
With coursework ranging from statistics and python programming to distributed computing, machine learning, and large language models, the curriculum aligns with industry needs and emphasizes hands-on and project-based learning, including opportunities to complete a capstone project and a for-credit internship. Students can also transfer up to 12 credits from prior graduate work or approved professional certificates, meaning the 48-credit degree can be completed in as few as 36 credits hours (or 18 months).
Key new courses reflect the changing landscape of AI and data science, including a deep dive into neural network architectures, generative AI, and data engineering “For example, this summer we are offering a new course in machine learning operations that not only reinforces model building but also teaches students to deploy, monitor, and manage models in real-world environments,” Connin says.
One of the new courses, Essential Math for Data Science and AI, is tailored to prepare students for technical content without unnecessary complexity. “It’s really focused on giving students the mathematical ladder they need,” Connin says.
The program is ideal for both seasoned professionals aiming to move into leadership and those from a variety of backgrounds looking to pivot into the field of data science. With evening classes, hybrid and online learning options, and multiple cohort start times (fall and winter), it’s designed to work around busy schedules. Small class sizes and a tight-knit community mean students receive personalized support and build strong networks with faculty, peers, alumni, and industry leaders.
“One of the things that makes our program special is the sense of community,” says Connin. “It’s made up of people who are passionate not only about the field but also about teaching and learning.”
Graduates will be well-prepared for a range of roles—data scientist and AI/ML engineer to data product manager and program lead—in industries like healthcare, finance, technology, and telecommunications. In addition to DU’s Career & Professional Development services, the Data Science program offers an “an augmented level of support, from knowledgeable faculty who can walk students through job prospects to an alumni led data science career playbook that equips students to navigate the job market after graduation.” says Susan Teague Rector, director of professional programs at the Ritchie School.
Throughout the program, students will develop a robust portfolio that they can use to showcase their skills and experience to future employers in Denver and beyond.
As AI and data science continue to influence nearly every discipline, they are becoming increasingly essential skills. “It’s a new literacy,” Connin says. “This degree will serve you across job roles and sectors, giving you an edge over peers who don’t have the same problem-solving and programming skills.”
