WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – A woman’s health is crucial for her daily functions as health directly impacts physical, mental and emotional well being.
In honor of Women’s Health Month, experts shared tips on a few physical activities that strengthen the mind and body at the same time.
The month of May is designated as Women’s Health Month, a month that not only focuses on the mental health of women, but their physical health.
“Mental health is anxiety, depression. When you work out, you can relieve that stress,” Healthy Living Director of the YMCA Wichita Falls Shannon Jordan said.
In 2023, more than 25% of women in the U.S. expressed some form of mental health illness.
While it’s crucial to receive adequate help from professionals, physical exercise can also ease tension.
“Physical health is what we want to do to combat that, especially coming to the Y. You’ll feel great, you’ll build that confidence,” Jordan said.
According to UCLA Health, as people engage more frequently in physical activity, their number of poor mental health days drops by more than 40% on average in a year.
Experts notice women taking a favor in yoga, Pilates, and tennis.
“Women make up a good amount of our program. Usually in the morning times it’s all full. From early morning to mid-afternoon with ladies’ drills or women’s clinics and private lessons,” Junior Tennis Coordinator for Hamilton Park Tennis Center Brenner Haley said.
No matter the schedule, age or physique, physical fitness for the betterment of mental health is something all women can take part in.
“It’s very important to address the lifestyles of women and what they do on a daily basis. A lot of women are raising a family and working daytime jobs. So, we make sure our programs are scheduled throughout the day so we can meet the needs of everyone,” Haley said.
“It reduces the risk of cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s or like the older aged people and stuff because again, not only are they doing something physical, but they’re thinking about strategy, they’re thinking about technique. There’s a lot going on up here while you’re actually moving your body. There’s a lot of health benefits, long-lasting ones,” Haley said.
Experts suggest using this month as well as the rest of the year to find a new activity help clear the mind and engage the body.
