'King's Ridge' opens in east Raleigh, offering affordable housing, health care – WRAL News

King’s Ridge, a 100-unit affordable housing community in east Raleigh, celebrated its grand opening on Tuesday.
The non-profit CASA dreamed up the community with the goal of reducing homelessness in Raleigh by 10%.
Inspired by a group of Raleigh women who witnessed the urgent need for permanent supportive housing, King’s Ridge is the result of years of planning and community support, costing over $26 million.
“To stand here is overwhelming and very emotional,” Molly Painter, Visionary for King’s Ridge said.
Molly Painter is one of the people behind the project, working with the non-profit CASA to bring her dream of having a community like this in the Triangle.
“Everyone in our community said yes. From the city to the county from public and private donors alike. Individuals corporations,” Painter said.
She gave a tour showing us three of the 100 units, the common spaces, all set up to provide not only housing but also supportive services like healthcare and employment assistance.
“What we wanted was a welcoming environment. We wanted the residents to feel the love that was poured into this,” Painter said.
There are already applications in for every apartment in the building, with hopes to having people start moving in by early-February.
Working with over a dozen local organizations, CASA has created a hub of essential services for property residents, from healthcare and education to employment and financial support.
When all is said and done, King’s Ridge Director Erin Yates says the hope is to lower homelessness by 10% in the city.
“Our numbers of homelessness are growing every day. One of the major reasons that it continues to grow is affordability,” Yates said. “Many folks are working really hard and doing what they need to do but it is expensive to live in Wake County.”
A key partner, The Kaleidoscope Project, will provide a platform for residents to have their own voice in community governance. In addition, King’s Ridge will host an on-site clinic, allowing residents to access medical care without resorting to emergency room visits.
WRAL News has covered rising rent costs in Raleigh for years.
According to Zillow, Raleigh’s median rent for all bedrooms and property types is $1,874.
A new study from Redfin shows Raleigh ranked sixth among metros where $2,000 rents the most space, behind Memphis, Birmingham, Louisville, St. Louis and Houston.
