How club enhances education, literacy in schools – Guardian Nigeria

Recently, the Rotary Club of Lagos made a lasting impact on local education visited Government Senior College Surulere and Lagos State Senior Secondary School (Special) as part of Rotary International’s September theme of ‘Basic Education and Literacy’.
This initiative, which is central to the club’s commitment to supporting communities, featured a blend of infrastructure development, resource donations, and student engagement activities.
The day’s events began at Government Senior College, where it spearheaded the renovation of the school’s water supply system, providing students with reliable access to clean water. This essential upgrade not only enhances students’ health and well-being but also fosters a more conducive learning environment.
In addition to improving the school’s facilities, the club enriched the school’s library with a significant donation of books. These educational materials will support the students in their studies and help instill a culture of reading, critical to the advancement of literacy.
The club’s impact extended further that day with a visit to Lagos State Senior Secondary School (Special), where they focused on enhancing digital literacy. The club refurbished the school’s computer laboratory, providing six new computers and installing ceiling fans to improve the learning atmosphere. This investment in digital infrastructure is poised to significantly boost the students’ technological skills, preparing them for a digitally-driven future.
The event was not just about infrastructure and donations but also about fostering a sense of community and motivation among students. Rotary Club President, Adetunji Lamidi, delivered an inspiring speech, urging students to recognise the power of education in shaping their futures and encouraging them to strive for excellence. His words set the tone for a day filled with engaging and motivational activities.
A highlight of the day was the vibrant student talent showcase, which included a singing competition that revealed the creativity of the students. The day also featured speeches from guest speakers, a reading competition aimed at fostering literacy, and a lively drama presentation that brought joy and camaraderie to all in attendance. These activities not only entertained but underscored the importance of teamwork, creativity, and learning.
