COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Local lawmakers championed the Protect Our Care “Lower Costs, Better Care” initiative this morning.
Congressman Sanford Bishop (D) and State Representatives Carolyn Hugley (D) and Teddy Reese (D) made the most of a “Care Force One” pit stop in Columbus, advocating for low-cost, quality healthcare.
“Healthcare is a right, not a privilege and everyone should have that right to healthcare because everybody should have a right to life,” Bishop said.
He confirmed the elected officials in attendance will do “everything that we can to make sure that we continue to fight” for the freedom to make healthcare choices.
Bishop emphasized women should have the right to make their own reproductive decisions.

Under the Inflation Reduction Act passed by the Biden-Harris Administration, the cost of insurance in some cases has been reduced, the insulin price capped and the cost of other medications made more flexible.
Democratic lawmakers are concerned those measures could regress with a second Trump presidency. Healthcare policies remain a key topic in the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

For Reese, whose grandmother recently dealt with a health emergency, showing his support for continued affordable medical care was important.
“The cost of medicine is outrageous for so many of our seniors, including her, and she’s suffering from that right now,” Reese said. “But we have seen some action from that, which is part of the reason why we cannot simply go back.”
