President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s education sector, with a particular focus on tertiary institutions.
Speaking at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, the President emphasised the strategic importance of education as a tool for national development and poverty alleviation.
The President delivered his remarks during the official commissioning of the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy, a centre named in honour of the former Commonwealth Secretary-General and renowned Nigerian diplomat.
President Tinubu praised Ambassador Anyaoku’s enduring legacy of public service and commitment to democratic values.
“His patriotism is boundless. His commitment to values and nation-building is an inspiration to generations,” Tinubu stated, acknowledging the contributions of Anyaoku’s friends and supporters in establishing the institute.
While highlighting his government’s substantial investment in education, the President also issued a cautionary note on the responsible use of institutional autonomy.
He directed pointed remarks at the university’s Governing Council and Management, referencing recent federal interventions prompted by what he described as “administrative rascalities.”
President Tinubu reiterated the importance of infrastructure maintenance, attributing past challenges in public institutions to a lack of a robust maintenance culture, and urged the university management to ensure that the newly commissioned facility is properly cared for.
In his remarks, Acting Vice Chancellor of UNIZIK, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, expressed deep appreciation for the President’s visit and support. He acknowledged the positive impact of federal government interventions, including support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which has bolstered the institution’s growth and academic offerings.
The event marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, as the Emeka Anyaoku Institute is poised to serve as a hub for global academic exchange, leadership training, and policy research in diplomacy and international studies.
