Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the week.
Specialty coffee consumption in the US has reached a 14‑year high. According to the National Coffee Association, 46% of adults in the US reported drinking a specialty coffee in the past day, up 84% since 2011 and surpassing past-day traditional coffee consumption at 42%. This milestone marks a shift led by younger consumers, with more than half of those aged 25 to 39 now opting for specialty-grade beans.
On the production front, Vietnam’s robusta exports have surged to unprecedented levels. In May, shipments rose 15% year‑on‑year, bringing the total export value for the first five months of 2025 to over US$ 5 billion. Strong demand from the EU and US markets has driven this growth, despite persistent logistical bottlenecks and global supply shortages.
Taken together, these trends illustrate a global market in a state of flux. On one hand, US consumers have a growing appetite for premium coffee experiences. On the other hand, leading origins, such as Vietnam, are scaling up to meet demand for more cost-effective options as customers’ pockets tighten.
Looking ahead, brands that strike a balance between quality, cost, consistency, and value are best poised to navigate an ever-evolving market. As the C price dips to multi-month lows, this challenge may become easier to achieve.
