Brunswick County’s Substance Use, Addiction, and Mental Health Commission shares overdose reports – WECT

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County Commissioners heard about the county’s ongoing efforts to cut the number of overdose deaths.
The Brunswick County Substance Use, Addiction, and Mental Health Commission presented the reports from last year. According to the presentation, overdose deaths are down 27% in the state and nationwide from last year.
Experts are attributing the decrease in deaths to having easy access to Naloxone.
One county commissioner says there is still work to be done to bring the numbers down even more.
“We’re still elevated and we’re elevated from pre-pandemic levels, but to just know that things that we are trying are working is an encouraging sign to do more of them,” said Laura Trueman.
Experts also attribute the decrease to having more treatment options through Medicaid.
