Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled nearly 1 per cent on Friday as weak global markets and a spike in Brent crude oil prices after Israel attacked Iran’s capital weighed on investor sentiment.

The 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 169.60 points or 0.68 per cent to 24,718.60.

Among the Sensex firms, Adani Ports, ITC, State Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, Titan, Kotak Mahindra Bank and UltraTech Cement were the major laggards.
On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, Sun Pharma and Maruti were the gainers. (PTI)

“The cooling down of headline retail inflation to the lowest in last six years, along with food inflation also being at 0.99% – the lowest since October 2021 and also as compared to April 2025, together underscores the resilience of the Indian economy. This sentiment is likely to sustain for a longer period given the recent RBI rate cut along with a favourable monsoon season that will further boost farmers’ confidence, and drive consumption, while keeping inflation in check.
Overall, this is a welcome news for the Indian food services sector as moderations in food inflation result in further easing of agricultural produce and raw material prices, thereby bringing some relief to the margin-dependent sector.”

Gold marked an all time of Rs. 1 lakh on domestic front and hovering close to $3500, as investors sought safe-haven assets after Israel’s strike on Iran heightened Middle East tensions. Geopolitical tensions escalated after Israel struck Iran as tensions mounted over U.S. efforts to halt Iran’s production of atomic bomb materials. This latest spike in hostilities in the Middle East has taken the focus off trade negotiations for now, and built the risk premium once again in the market. Israel declared a state of emergency, citing expected missile and drone attacks from Tehran, and the U.S. military is preparing for various contingencies in the Middle East, including potential assistance with evacuating American civilians. On data front, US CPI was reported better than expectations but the PPI data was slightly higher than estimates. Number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits held at an eight-month high last week, while slowing domestic demand helped to restrain producer prices in May. Dollar index and US Yields also inched lower amidst the economic data points. Focus today will be on US Michigan consumer sentiment.

US-China trade deal optimism was short-lived with limited details as US President Trump once again raises the trade tariff uncertainty, which added to the gold appeal. Gold’s rise is further supported by easing inflation pressures in the U.S. Both the inflation reports from US has fuelled expectations of aggressive interest rate cuts by the FED, but for the risk of tariff impacts in the coming months. Weakness seen in USD against major currencies. US Dollar weakening is also due to FED likely pausing rate hikes. Global central banks are on pace to accumulate over 1,000 metric tons of gold in 2025, marking a fourth consecutive year of heavy buying.US Central Bank decisions from FED is slated for 18th June 2025 (Wednesday) which could provide a clearer path. Oswal Pumps Limited is entering the public markets with a strong narrative backed by impressive growth, vertical integration, and strategic alignment with national priorities like PM-KUSUM. The company has demonstrated exceptional financial performance—registering a 45% CAGR in revenue over the past two years, with industry-leading return ratios such as an 88.73% RONW and 81.85% ROCE. Its dominant 38% market share in solar pump installations under the PM-KUSUM scheme and over 87% revenue link to government-driven demand offer strong visibility for future growth.
Despite near-term risks around working capital intensity and government dependence, OPL’s solid order book, backward integration into solar modules, and scalable manufacturing capabilities present a compelling case. At a post-issue valuation that appears conservative when benchmarked against listed peers, we believe the IPO offers attractive entry for medium- to long-term in

“The gold prices in India hitting an all-time-high is on the much-expected lines given the latest development in international geopolitical tensions, and weakening of the INR. The uncertainties drive up the demand of gold as a safe investment haven as compared to other asset classes. The price trend is going to face some resistance which will keep it below 1 lakh in the short-term.
However, prices may see some correction due to bouts of volatility. We anticipate prices to hover in the range of Rs. 1,00,200 – 1,00,500 on MCX, subject to international economic influences.”

Since India relies on imports for over 80% of its crude oil needs, a conflict between Iran and Israel could lead to a spike in Brent crude prices. Iran holds about 9% of the world’s oil reserves, and any disruption could impact several key Indian sectors, including oil marketing companies (such as BPCL, HPCL, and IOC), paints (like Asian Paints and Berger Paints), as well as the automobile and cement industries. These sectors may experience demand slowdown or margin pressure if tensions escalate and persist for more than 3–6 months, particularly if Brent crude prices rise above the USD 82–85 per barrel mark.

Indian markets plunge on Israel-Iran tensions; Sensex falls 860+ points, crude oil surges 12%, gold hits six-week high amid global geopolitical risks.
Aksha Kamboj, Vice President, India Bullion and Jewellers Association and Executive Chairperson, Aspect Global Ventures
“Gold prices extended their gains following Israel’s airstrikes on Iran earlier today, intensifying the already fragile geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. Iran has pledged to retaliate after being formally censured by the UN’s nuclear watchdog. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounding the US-China trade negotiations, compounded by President Donald Trump’s threat to impose unilateral tariffs within two weeks, has pushed investors toward traditional safe-haven assets. Market attention will remain focused on the evolving conflict in the Middle East and any forthcoming response from China regarding the trade tensions. Any further escalation is likely to drive gold prices higher, potentially pushing them back toward previous record highs.”
On this ominous Friday the 13th, markets are gripped by caution as bearish signals intensify—despite the RBI’s jumbo rate cut, banking stocks remain weak, and FIIs have sold Rs. 3,549 crore so far this June, contributing to continued volatility. Geopolitical risks are also in play, with Trump threatening 55% tariffs on China, which downplays the US deal, while WTI crude nears $72 per barrel amid US-Iran tensions. Nifty’s sharp sell-off signals that bears are in control, with the 25222 level remaining a major hurdle. Stock-specific action saw IndiGo and SpiceJet fall over 3% after an Air India crash in Ahmedabad, while Sterlite Technologies soared 11% on securing a Rs. 2,631 crore BSNL contract, and Tanla Platforms surged 9% ahead of a board meeting to consider a share buyback. Zomato and Tata Motors are under bearish watch on intraday strength, with Zomato particularly vulnerable below Rs. 237.
) The southwest monsoon, which regained momentum this week, is expected to cover most parts of northwest India, including Delhi, by June 25, well ahead of the usual dates, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The primary rain-bearing system reached Kerala on May 24, marking its earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when it arrived on May 23.
Aided by strong low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the monsoon advanced quickly over the next few days, covering parts up to central Maharashtra, including Mumbai, and the entire northeast by May 29.
However, it stalled from May 28-29 until June 10-11 before becoming active again.
The lack of rainfall since early June led to a sharp rise in temperatures, triggering heatwave conditions across large parts of northwest and central India since June 8-9.
According to the IMD’s extended range forecast, the monsoon is now likely to cover the remaining parts of central and eastern India and some areas of northwest India by June 18.
It is expected to advance over most of northwest India between June 19 and June 25.
An IMD official said the system is likely to reach Delhi by June 22-23, ahead of the normal onset date of June 27. – PTI

Inflation is headed closer to ~2% and the rate cutting cycle is not over; we expect two more 25bp rate cuts to a terminal repo rate of 5.00%.
Headline inflation moderated below market expectations, but was in line with ours, to 2.8% y-o-y in May from 3.2% in April, with sharp monthly declines across a number of food categories. Core inflation was unchanged at 4.2%, with price pressures subdued across goods (ex-gold) and services. Data for the first 10 days of June suggest inflation is tracking even lower, at around 2.0% y-o-y. We expect low inflation to be sustained, and inflation to average 3.3% y-o-y in FY26, below the RBI’s projection of 3.7%, with risks skewed to the downside. Despite the shift in the RBI’s policy stance back to ‘neutral’, the policy easing cycle is not over, in our view, because cyclical growth and inflation remain soft. We expect a pause in August, and 25bp cuts in October and December to a terminal rate of 5.00%.

Price Surge: Gold’s share of reserves rose alongside a 30% price increase last year, and an additional 27% rise in 2024, pushing prices to a record $3,500/oz.
Safe Haven & De-dollarisation: Despite no yield and storage costs, gold is prized for its liquidity, safety, and insulation from counterparty risk and sanctions. Central banks—especially in developing countries—are diversifying away from the US dollar due to concerns over geopolitical risks and US debt. De-dollarisation accelerated after Western sanctions on Russia.
Sanctions as a Catalyst: Five of the ten largest gold reserve increases since 1999 were linked to countries facing sanctions. Nations close to China and Russia have notably increased gold reserves since 2022.
Motivations: A survey of 57 central banks found the main reasons for holding gold include fear of sanctions, expectations of changes in the global monetary system, and a desire to reduce US dollar dependence.
Changing Correlations: Traditionally, gold fell when real yields rose, but since early 2022, gold has increasingly served as a hedge against political rather than inflation risk.
Outlook: The ECB notes that higher prices have historically driven increased supply and official demand, implying the trend could continue.
Key Takeaway:
Gold’s role as a strategic reserve asset is rising rapidly, driven by geopolitical uncertainty, de-dollarisation, and central bank diversification—now surpassing the euro and second only to the US dollar in global reserves.
