“Youth-on! Hackathon-2024” Creative Programming Competition by VNUK Institute in collaboration with UNICEF Vietnam: Inspring smart learning in the AI era – Đại học Đà Nẵng

On 25th August, 2024, VNUK Institute for Research and Executive Education – The University of Danang (UD) has held the final round of the creative programming competition “Youth-on! Hackathon-2024” for students with the theme “Smart learning in the AI era”.
According to Dr. Tran The Vu – Vice Dean of VNUK Institute, the competition is within the framework of the “Healthy city for youth” project (phase 2) and the “Da Nang – Child-friendly city” initiative (phase 2023-2026) which are supported and coordinated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam and other partners such as: Botnar & Ecorys Fund, Da Nang’s Department of Education and Training, Da Nang’s Youth Union, and other secondary and high schools in the area.
Speaking at the program, Ms. Silvia Danailov – UNICEF Representative in Vietnam expressed her joy, highlighting the significance of the theme of the competition which is not only consistent with the common vision for a healthy Da Nang city for young people, but also inspires the youth to actively apply artificial intelligence for the better learning, life and city environment.

Appreciating the role, efforts and enthusiasm of VNUK Institute which closely coordinated with UNICEF Vietnam and other partners to organize the competition, Ms. Danailov congratulated the creativity and passion of the students, with more than 100 participants for 20 programming projects.
UNICEF Vietnam’s representative hoped the participants always stimulate discovery and development thinking, especially lifelong learning thinking.
Ms. Susanne Christine Hausmann Muela Ribera – representative of Botnar & Ecorys Foundation, agreed with the “3C” (Curiosity – Creation – Collaboration) message with the participants of the competition. Accordingly, by exploring and discovering problems in life, family and the city where students are living, they will promote creative ideas and technical solutions to help their own study and the local community.

With the support of the Advisory board who are experts, experienced lecturers as well as the Jury, among 20 ideas and solutions, 7 projects were chosen for awards.
The teams went through the following parts: presenting ideas (5 minutes), demo product (2 minutes), answering questions and convincing the judges (5 minutes) about ideas, technology solutions, usefulness, utility and feasibility, practical application.

In the end, the organizing committee awarded the following prizes:
1 first prize for “Feel the Scene” team with the project “Device to support spatial description for the visually impaired” (worth 7 million VNĐ);
1 second prize for “Free2Sign” team with the project “Software to support sign language learning” (worth 5 million VNĐ);
1 third prize for “FLTs” team with the project “Friendly learning tools” (worth 3 million VNĐ);
In addition, the organizing committee also awarded 2 encouragement prizes and 2 community-oriented prizes.
