One of the nation’s leading health care insurance providers, UnitedHealthcare has agreed to pay out millions in a settlement related to unauthorized telemarketing calls.
A federal judge approved a $2.5 million settlement to resolve claims that the company had repeatedly made telemarketing calls after recipients asked to be removed from their contact list, according to Top Class Actions.
The lawsuit charges that UnitedHealthcare violated the Telephone Consumer Protect Act by making unauthorized telemarketing calls between 2015 and 2019. The deadline to file a claim is April 15.
The judge signed off on the deal last month, after certifying two classes in October 2023, Top Class Actions reported.
One was a “do-not-call” class of people who said they received calls after asking that their numbers be added to UnitedHealth’s “do-not-call” list, and the other was for individuals who received “wrong number,” calls between 2015 and 2019 despite not being UnitedHealth members at that time.
The settlement covers some 12,000 people, court documents show.
According to Newsweek, settlement members will likely receive between $350 and $1,000 depending on the number of valid claims submitted.
The lead plaintiff of the case will receive $20,000 and the attorneys handling the case will receive $833,333, the outlet reported.
To qualify for part of the settlement, filers must have received one of more prerecorded phone calls between Jan. 9, 2015, and Jan. 9, 2019, from UnitedHealthcare despite not being a customer.
Proof of receiving unsolicited calls may be required to file the claim.
