Nigerian music icon 2Baba has added his voice to the growing calls for sweeping reforms in Nigeria’s education sector, following the release of troubling statistics from the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a post shared via his Instagram Story on May 8, 2025, the legendary singer emphasized the urgent need for systemic change across the continent, stating: “We need to change our entire education system in Nigeria/Alkebulan/Africa.”
His remarks quickly resonated with many Nigerians, sparking widespread conversation and praise for his bold stance. Social media users echoed his concerns, pointing to the deeper issues plaguing the nation’s academic institutions.
This comes in response to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s release of official 2025 UTME performance statistics, which paint a bleak picture of academic achievement nationwide. Of the 1,955,069 candidates who took the exam, more than 1.5 million scored below 200—over 76% of the total. In stark contrast, just 4,756 candidates scored above 320, while 7,658 scored between 300 and 319.
“This statistical breakdown offers a comprehensive snapshot of this year’s UTME performance,” JAMB noted in its statement.
The data has intensified calls for urgent reform, with many now urging policymakers to reevaluate and revamp the nation’s educational framework from the ground up.
